Rich Cutler BSc(Hons) ARPS
I am a Brighton-based fine-art photographer. I was awarded the distinction of Associate of the Royal Photographic Society in 2009, and my work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2011, the University of Brighton selected me for its highly regarded master’s degree in photography.
My interest in photography began in 2003, when I bought a digital camera, owing to the immediacy of digital photography and the total control over the image that this medium brings. I now use both digital and large-format film cameras with digital postproduction.
Despite being a relative newcomer to photography, I have an old-fashioned approach: I prefer to get as much right as possible in front of the lens before pressing the shutter. I use the computer to enhance only what’s already there: distorting reality by creating an image that never existed in the viewfinder is anathema. My acid test of what constitutes a photograph is if someone could be shown the original scene and would instantly recognise not only the location but also its mood and lighting.
